Werther’s + Weber’s = Roadtrip!

What says summer better than a road trip?  Not much! There has been a lot of  “stuff” going on in our lives, so when we got an opportunity to get out of town for a couple of days, we jumped at it with full gratitude.  Mini Me and I officially kicked the summer off on Father’s Day Weekend by packing our bags, hopping in the car on Friday afternoon and headed up north to Muskoka for the #PioneerCamp16 Blogger Family weekend.  Of course no road trip to Muskoka is complete without Werther’s Original Hard Candy and a stop at Weber’s! (We were lucky enough to have a $10 Gift Certificate to spend there.)

It was so good to get away and meet up with some old friends and make some new ones. The video pretty much sums up how awesome of a weekend it was!  One that we will be forever grateful for.

Flash forward to today – Mini Me recently got back from an amazing week at OPC Girls Camp.  When I asked her what her favourite part about camp this time around she said had a few favourites; but the things that topped the list were the people, the food, and “Devo/Siesta Time.

Once again she made amazing friendships and built a stronger relationship with God.  We are so grateful that we were able to get some financial assistance to make this happen for her.  (It’s not easy to send a kid to camp when you are a solo parent & entrepreneur!)   The summer is not over yet and we’d love to give your kid a chance to make amazing memories like mine did.   Click here  for more information about the camp and follow the prompts to register. Save $50*/child/week by using the code #SocialRobin16.

Chocolate Month is a Beautiful Thing and It’s Here!

You know what’s sexy? Chocolate.  Chocolate is sexy!  The month of May is Chocolate Month in the City of Burlington.  Tourism Burlington has done a remarkable job working with local Chocolatiers, artisan food producers and spas in creating the Burlington Chocolate Trail!

I had the opportunity to go out with a select few of my blogger friends and hit the BCT.   We all met up at the City of Burlington Tourism Office where we met up with Peter, our delightful driver for the day from Burlington Taxi.

20160412_102459Our first stop was Je Spa at 612 Brant Street in Burlington where I was fortunate enough to have some chocolate indulgence without the calories!  I was treated to a facial with the Eminence Chocolate Hydration Masque. The anti-oxidant rich cocoa is great for your skin and helps fight signs of aging. Who knew that chocolate is actually be good for your skin?!!  This particular line from Eminence is also Vegan & Gluten-Free.  If you are looking for a bit of pampering I highly recommend booking an appointment at Je Spa. You can even get your feet summer ready with a coco pedicure! They are offering a milk chocolate with every service during the month of May and a discount on chocolate services. Now how sweet is that?!!

After we left Je Spa we had a quick stop for lunch to go from Tamp Coffee Co.  This is not an official stop on the BCT; but it is so worth it!  I ended up having a grilled cheese sandwich and a cappuccino.  OMG it was the BEST grilled cheese sandwich I have ever had!   I mean my tastebuds had multiple orgasms that’s how good it was.  Seriously good eats my friends.  I also love that they support local artists and have a mini art display on their walls.  It’s just a cool place, so go check it out.

After our quick lunch stop we hopped back into our Burlington Taxi and headed to Molly Cake, at 361 Brant Street. There we had some fun filling macarons and learning how to make chocolate fudge buttercream.  You need to stop in their and try a macaron or a sweet & salty brownie.  While you are there, check out the amazing work they have done with their custom cakes!  Everything they bake is from scratch and real.  That means they use real butter, real cream, couverture chocolate, and they don’t use additives, preservatives or fillers in their baking.   Good old fashioned baking that will make your day a little sweeter!  Stop in and say hello to Christine and let her know that you are on the Burlington Chocolate Trail and she will give you “The Cookie” for FREE!

20160412_140013_001

Next stop we hit was Walker’s Chocolates at 3350 Fairview Street. Where we got to meet David & Jennifer Walker.  The second generation of Walker’s Chocolates.  This is the place where I learned to love escargot!  Escargot? What?!!  Yes, you read it correctly.  I had escargot at Walker’s Chocolates and it was ah-mazing!!! Ok, so it’s not the typical escargot.  This one is made of delicious, creamy caramel and marshmallow filling.  Sooo good!  Everything in this store is of exceptional hand made quality.  You need to make sure you stop here to see all of the decadent and unique finds here.  They have truffles, mouth-watering melt-aways, home-made cookies, and chocolate in just about any shape you could imagine!  Walker’s is offering a  sample of  their famous Mint Melt-away to trail participants.  Spend $10 or more and receive a free gourmet cookie. (One discount per person).

At this point in the day I seriously thought my stomach was going to explode!  I had definitely over-indulged on sweets; but we weren’t done yet.  We had two more stops to make!  Next up was Mrs. B’s Gifthouse, which is just a few doors down from Walker’s Chocolates at 3350 Fairview Street, where we got to meet the actual Mr.& Mrs. B!  We got there just in time to see Mr. B whip up a batch of his famous biscotti, that we also got to sample.  He has been making this biscotti for over 20 years right in the store.  Drop in for a free sample and get 10% off anything in the store.  They also ship all across the country if you see something that you want to share with someone that can’t make it to the store themselves!

20160412_144444Last but not least we stopped into Christy’s Gourmet Gifts at 3530 Mainway Drive.  This is where we had the pleasure of meeting Bernhard, the Chocolatier.  He gave us a very educational and enlightening lesson on the art of making chocolate and chocolate tempering.

YOU can have an opportunity to learn from him too! From May 19th-21st, for only $45/pp, learn from this Master Chocolatier , sample chocolate from around the world,  and create and take home your own chocolate creation.  Spaces are limited so call 905-336-9080 and reserve your spot today!   If you are not able to do the workshop, it is still worth your while to make a stop there on the BCT to get a sample Christy’s Crunch (chocolate toffee butter biscuits), Origin Chocolate and Cacao Nibs.

We didn’t get a chance to stop into LA Candy Bar or Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory; but they are also on the trail so I encourage you to go check them out.  Leave a comment or tweet to me @ladybossmom and let me know about your experience on the Burlington Chocolate Trail!

“If you can only be one thing…Be Kind” ~ Robin Read Griffin. (page 122) laurie goodman photography’s life messages book of inspirational canadian women

A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Laurie Goodman, who has become a dear friend of mine.  We originally met online through the most supportive Facebook group, that I have ever been a part of, called MAFE (Milton Area Female Entrepreneurs) which was created by local real estate rock star Sandy Hatzis.

Laurie put a call out to the MAFE Group that she was working on a movement called Life Messages™.  As Laurie explains,  “We all have stories. We all have a voice. Life messages photo sessions give people an opportunity to express, empower and inspire through words and art.”

In 2014, it was my great honour to be photographed by Laurie, as seen in the picture above, and share my life message – “If you can only be one thing…Be Kind.”  Laurie collected so many powerful messages; which she in turn had put into a book  and launched “laurie goodman photography’s life messages™ book of inspirational canadian women“.

Twitter Party: What will the future look like for our kids?

CST-Robit-V2-570x323

When you were younger, did you think that your life would be as immersed in technology as it is today?  I certainly didn’t.  And I’m sure that my parents didn’t either!  When I was in grade school there was only one computer in the entire school for the students to use.  Technology has certainly changed our day to day living.  Take today for example; I went to the bank and used an ATM, I went to the grocery store and used a self-check out kiosk, I used my app on my smart phone to pre-order and pay for my drink…I didn’t even have to talk to a human until I picked up my drink!

This got me to thinking…how is all of this technology going to affect Mini Me and her future career?  Some jobs that we know today will become obsolete and there will be a bunch of new jobs that haven’t even been dreamed of yet.  It’s up to us as parents to make sure that our kids are prepared for what the future has to offer.

CST Learning Project Competition

Our friends over at CST get this. They just launched their annual CST Learning Project competition which funds new learning activities for children with $250,000 up for grabs. (They take the future seriously). It’s part of their cool Inspired Minds program that also includes Careers 2030—a deep dive into the possible careers our kids will have. (Robot Counsellor? Data Miner? Rewilder?)

Inspiration, Empowerment and Winning

This is me and CJ from Go Daddy!

Today is International Women’s Day.  From the moment that I woke up this morning I have felt inspired, empowered and grateful to have the opportunity to blaze my own path.  I am so honoured to be surrounded by remarkable women in my community that work tirelessly to make this world a better place for our children and our grandchildren.

I had the opportunity to meet and also reconnect with many amazing women this past weekend at the annual Mompreneurs Conference at the Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel & Conference Centre., including CJ from Go Daddy whom I have been chatting with online for a while.  It was also pretty awesome when GoDaddy tweeted the picture of us to their 219K Followers! They also hooked up with some pretty nice GoDaddy swag too!

I am still buzzing several days later, not only over the amazing connections that I made; but over the amazing companies, products and services that have come to life from Moms that want to make a difference!    There is one company in particular that I was really impressed by that I noticed in the Marketplace at the Conference, who also happened to be a Finalist in the Mompreneurs Awards.  The company is called “Handmade For You Love Lu” and is owned by a young mother of three, Laura Batista (nickname Lu). Lu makes beautiful handmade coconut button scarves; which she had on display in the Marketplace.  I was really impressed when I found out the story behind the company, and that a portion of each sale goes to humanitarian projects in Cuba.  She was holding a draw to win one of her beautiful scarves, so naturally I had to throw my card in.   Guess what?  I found out this morning, on International Women’s Day, that I WON!!!   Aren’t they gorgeous?!! You can order  your own Coconut Button Scarf and feel good about your purchase.  Not just because you’ll be the envy of all your girlfriends; but because you’re also supporting a good cause at the same time.  Win, win.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Taking the Leap!

Blogger girl

I have been immersed in social media for several years; but have never called myself a Blogger.  My line has always been “I’m a Tweeter, not a Blogger!”

I have been to few conferences, such as Blissdom Canada, that have really opened my eyes to the world of blogging and the opportunities to work with some pretty amazing brands; but I couldn’t really see how that would work with my existing personal brand, so I would leave the conference happy to have learned lots and made some great connections and then it was back to the world of social media.

Recently I stumbled upon a Facebook post by Julie Nowell of 3Chicken Consulting, who said that she was accepting applications into a 6 week Blogger Mentoring Challenge.  One of my goals for 2016 is to be more visible, so I thought that this was a perfect opportunity for me to get the blog up and running on my website Robin Read Griffin – which I am embarrassed to admit that I haven’t updated since 2014.  I signed up for the mentorship and got accepted into the challenge!  Woot woot!

As I was reading through the first homework challenge, and reflecting on an amazing afternoon that I just had with some amazing ladies at Swagger Sessions, I decided that it was time to take massive action towards my goals and ladybossmom.com was born!

Now I can officially say that I am a Blogger!  I would like to invite you to subscribe to my blog and join me on my journey, where I will share with you stories of inspiration, entrepreneurship, motherhood, self-care and a celebration of all of the Ladyboss Mom’s out there!
